Storage Projects Rise in Importance
New York Times - Wednesday, January 02, 2008
Other industries are also swimming in storage-hungry data. Capitol Broadcasting Co. (CBC), a Raleigh, N.C.-based operator of five TV stations and several radio assets, is grappling with a 120% growth in e-mail volume and a wealth of media-rich graphics, audio and video files that reside on its networks.
"While e-mail archiving was the catalyst to move beyond DAS, other looming IT challenges were also driving the need for more robust storage," explains Chris Welty, a CBC systems engineer. The company is moving to IBM's BladeCenter architecture and has purchased an IP SAN from StoneFly Inc. in Hayward, Calif., in a further effort to provide single-instance storage on file servers, Welty says.

Storage Alphabet Soup: Of DAS, NAS and SANs
Network Centric Security - Friday, August 31, 2007
A NAS looks like a file folder to a user or camera, said Jame Ervin at Stonefly Networks. That's a potential disadvantage: many devices can store data in it, but it's slower at retrieving data. So for larger surveillance networks, a storage area network might be the better fit.
A SAN is a network of hard disks devoted to storage, analogous to a file cabinet with many files in several drawers, so storage can be shared across devices and users. This flexibility enables users to partition a SAN so that data from a particular camera or surveillance area is written to a specific area on the SAN, Ervin said.

In the bronze tier, we used a StoneFly 4000 Storage Concentrator, on which we created iSCSI target volumes from disk arrays on the DS4200, and exported those target volumes to servers and desktop systems in our test domain over TCP. ... Across all operating systems, a primary goal of Veritas Storage Foundation is to give system administrators a central point of storage management down to the spindle level. Veritas SFW includes a drag-and-drop central Veritas Enterprise Administrator (VEA) console to enhance storage resource visibility, management, and reporting across host servers and diverse storage arrays.

Eliminating Physical Infrastructure Dependence to Manage Servers and Storage Networks Centrally

Setting up remote data centers, disaster recovery sites and new offices can become a painless process. In order to accomplish the transition from physical to virtual assets, approaching IT operations from a layered perspective makes sense.

The benefits of SANs for SMBs
InfoStor - Friday, June 15, 2007
Although SANs are pervasive in larger enterprises, many small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have yet to take the plunge and are still tethered to direct-attached storage (DAS) configurations. ... Jame Ervin, product manager for StoneFly says SANs centralize storage and improve capacity utilization. "If you have lots of application servers and they each have their own storage, eventually one server will be 10% full and another will be 90% full. You can't capture the 90% that's sitting idle.
